Glaciers in Austria – Our Experience

Personally, Kája and I prefer to visit the glaciers in Austria at the end of November, when the season is already in full swing at most glacier resorts, but the main season hasn’t started yet, so we don’t have to worry about overcrowded capacities not only on the slopes but also in hotels, where you can find even luxury hotels at discounted prices until the pre-Christmas days.

9 tips for glaciers in Austria

Thanks to their altitude and stable snow conditions, Austrian glaciers allow skiing almost all year round. Some resorts, such as Hintertux, offer skiing even in summer under good temperature conditions, which attracts professionals and recreational skiers who want to enjoy snow outside the regular winter season.

On the glaciers, you can look forward to a wide range of slopes, from easy green and blue runs for beginners and families with children, to the most challenging black slopes. At the same time, experienced skiers can enjoy permitted freeride runs in deep snow and powder in some resorts.

8. Dachstein Glacier – Glaciers in Austria

Why visit the Dachstein glacier?

Schladming – Dachstein is an ideal place for cross-country skiers and hikers looking for beautiful views and natural beauty. Although the glacier resort, with regard to responsibility to nature and economy, canceled the operation of ski facilities on the Dachstein glacier in the season before last, the cable car and other tourist attractions, including trails for cross-country skiers, and apparently also for ski mountaineers, remain in operation according to current conditions.

I always recommend checking the current info on the operation of cable cars before your trip. Dachstein definitely belongs on my list of tips for glaciers in Austria, and although you can no longer ski there, it offers unique experiences, including an ice cave and a suspension bridge with views of the Alps, which you surely know from photos.
