The most beautiful mountain lakes in Upper Austria

Langbathseen

Langbathseen

The fairytale lakes Vorderer Langbathsee and Hinterer Langbathsee are hidden just a few minutes’ drive from the popular Traunsee. Specifically, you will have the closest from the town of Ebensee. Free parking is located just a few steps from the shore of the first lake, making this tip suitable for families with small children.

You should be able to walk around at least the first half of the lower lake trail without any problems with a stroller and wheelchair (see photo of the trail below).

Fit mothers and fathers with an outdoor stroller can go on the way to the upper lake, but I personally recommend a baby carrier on the back. Swimming is allowed here. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome. I recommend finding a private small bay for dog swimming. For greater freedom with dogs, I recommend dates outside the main holiday season. Always pay attention to current information and signs on site.

Offensee

On the other side of Langbathseen, not far from Traunsee, lies an equally fairytale mountain lake in Upper Austria, namely Offensee. Offensee is our secret tip for a trip at any time of the year. If the road is passable, you can therefore go here even in winter. In any case, the best time is again in the summer season. From spring to autumn you can enjoy a nice easy walk around the lake.

I recommend an outdoor stroller – a tricycle for children, but you should be able to manage most of the trail without any problems even with a regular stroller, and holidays with a wheelchair will not be deprived either. Again, at least half of the trail can be driven on an almost flat and paved surface. You can find the quality of the trail again in the photo below.

Ödseen/ Lakes in Upper Austria

Other beautiful mountain lakes in Upper Austria include two natural treasures, Ödseen. You will find Small and Large Ödsee approximately 20 minutes by car from Grünau im Almtal, where I also recommend you to stay. We like to go to the lakes to swim, as the water is warmer here than at the following lake, Almsee.

But I’ll leave it up to you whether you visit the lake just as a trip, or whether you pack your swimsuit with you. I also recommend water shoes. Remember that you are in a natural park and e.g. leeches or small snakes simply belong to nature.

Almsee / Lakes in Upper Austria

I dare say that Almsee is one of the most beautiful lakes in Upper Austria. It would definitely be a shame if you didn’t go here at least once during your travels to Austria. A direct road leads to Almsee from the town of Grünau im Almtal and, given the proximity of Ödseen.

I recommend combining these lakes into one weekend. Small and large holidaymakers will certainly also like a stop in the natural wild park with animals – Cumberland Wildlife Park.

Gosauseen / Lakes in Upper Austria

I assume that I don’t have to introduce the Gosauseen lakes any more. They are our favorite constant among the tips for Austrian lakes in Upper Austria and should definitely be on your list of planned places for your vacation, ideally from May to the end of October.

Personally, we go here in spring, summer and autumn and each time Vorderer Gosausee and Hinterer Gosausee surprise us with some new corner. Likewise, we look forward every time to whether there will be enough water to enjoy the middle lake Gosaulacke, or not.

Swimming is possible at the lower and upper lakes. Look for accommodation in nearby Gosau and if you are lucky, you will find a free date in the guest house directly by the lake.

You will find a parking lot with a toilet just a few meters from the first lake (there is a turnstile here from autumn 2024) and you can also park lower down if the main parking lot is full. You can manage the trip along the trail even with a stroller, I recommend a tricycle to the upper lake – expect a climb. You can also get around part of the first lake with a wheelchair. Well-behaved dogs on a leash are welcome again.

I consider sunny days after heavy rains to be the ideal time to visit, when there is enough water in the lake and in the waterfall. However, pay attention to safety and follow the current warnings on site again – e.g. fallen trees across trails and the like.
