Have you visited Miramare Castle in the Gulf of Trieste yet? It is one of the most beautiful landmarks near Trieste, standing on a cliff right above the Adriatic Sea, about 8 kilometers from the city center. Miramare Castle, along with the two hotels I recommend below, is my secret tip for a romantic seaside holiday near the city of Trieste.
Miramare Castle near Trieste
Miramare Castle was built in 1860 by the Austrian Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg as a residence for himself and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium. The elegant white building, surrounded by the sea and greenery, looks almost like something out of a fairy tale and is one of the most photographed spots in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
- Park entrance fee: FREE
- Miramare Castle entrance fee: approx. 10 EUR
Hotel Miramare – Adults Only
This modern hotel sits right on the coast between the center of Trieste and Miramare Castle. The rooms and restaurant offer direct sea views, and you’ll find a small swimming spot right below the hotel.
- I recommend the rooms with panoramic sea views
- Quieter location outside the center and close to Miramare Castle (a 15-minute walk)
- Offers free parking and is 100 m from the bus stop to Trieste
Hotel Riviera & Maximilian’s
On the other hand, just about 800 meters from Miramare Castle, you’ll find our favorite four-star Hotel Riviera. It is located on the Strada Costiera coastal road, and you can easily walk to the castle in a few minutes. The hotel terrace and sea-facing rooms offer some of the most beautiful views of the Gulf of Trieste.
I also recommend this hotel for romantic stays. I believe you will especially appreciate the sea view and the location between Trieste and Miramare Castle.
- It stands on a cliff above the sea, and most rooms have a panoramic sea view
- The hotel has private beach access, where an elevator takes guests directly from the hotel (from May 14th)
- It is housed in a historic villa from 1898, complemented by a modern wing with large windows facing the sea

Miramare Castle near Trieste – History and what to see
The castle interior has preserved its original 19th-century appearance to this day. century. If you visit, you’ll see, for example, the ceremonial salons, the private rooms of Maximilian and Charlotte, and a wealth of historical furniture and decorations. The castle is closely linked to the dramatic fate of its owner. Maximilian’s reign ended tragically when he was executed in 1867.
The castle is also surrounded by an extensive park covering more than 20 hectares, which reaches down to the seashore. Archduke Maximilian had plants brought to the garden from various parts of the world, creating a romantic park with viewpoints overlooking the Gulf of Trieste.
Personally, I rank Miramare Castle among the most popular excursion spots near Trieste; it’s an ideal place for a walk through historic architecture and exotic vegetation with breathtaking sea views.
