Skopelos Island: 10 tips on what to see and which beaches to visit

Skopelos Island

Skopelos Island belongs to the Sporades archipelago, and we were personally surprised by how beautifully green the interior is, with pine forests reaching down to the sea in some places. And those Skopelos beaches! You’ll find three ports here: Skopelos (Chora), Agnontas, and Glossa (Loutraki). Keep this in mind when booking your ferry and renting a car at the port. We personally took a large ferry to Skopelos and rented cars there as well.

Skopelos is ideal for swimming, hiking, and strolling through villages. However, you can also visit several monuments, and the local Greek gastronomy will definitely delight you.

TOP 10 ACCOMMODATION ON SKOPELOS

After less than a week on Skiathos, I booked us a ferry to the neighboring island of Skopelos, which is mainly known for the filming of the musical Mamma Mia. I had a car reserved again right at the port and nice accommodation for the three of us in a bungalow with a pool and a beautiful view of the town and the harbor.

In high season, I recommend making reservations well in advance. We were here in early June and had no problem choosing accommodation, ferries, or car rentals at the last minute. During the summer holidays, however, I believe the selection will be smaller.

What to see on Skopelos Island?

You could say we drove across Skopelos Island from one end to the other. We even visited a few beaches several times. Places known from the movie Mamma Mia are well marked on the map. However, some beaches we discovered by chance don’t even have a name, so I’m just adding photos and maybe you’ll come across them while wandering the island too. If you want to travel around the island, I recommend booking a Fiat Pandina.

Skopelos

1. Glisteri Beach

A quiet pebble bay in the northeast of the island with crystal clear water and pine trees reaching down to the sea. Thanks to its intimate atmosphere and beach bar, it’s ideal for a relaxing day away from the main tourist rush. The beach is small in size, but outside the season there aren’t many people, and because it’s tucked away in a bay, it’s less windy. You can get here from the port by car in about 10 minutes.

2. Agnontas

A picturesque fishing village on the southwest coast with emerald water and traditional taverns. A great place for swimming and a slow lunch of fresh fish at sunset.

3. Amarandos Cove – Skopelos Island

I recommend not missing this place! A wild rocky coastline with iconic pine trees growing out of the rock and crystal clear water. A popular spot for snorkeling, photography, and lovers of movie scenery (Mamma Mia! was filmed here). We found our own little beach just a short walk from here.

4. Monastery of Agios Riginos

A peaceful place dedicated to the island’s patron saint, located in the hills above Skopelos Town. It has historical significance for the island and offers a quiet atmosphere with views of the surrounding landscape.

5. Glossa – Skopelos Island

A mountain village in the northwest of the island with an authentic atmosphere and beautiful sunsets. Narrow stone streets, white houses, and a view of Loutraki port give the impression that time has stood still here.

6. Church of Agios Ioannis

Another of those beautiful places I definitely recommend visiting on Skopelos. A small white chapel on a rocky cliff above the Aegean Sea, accessible by a steep staircase. One of the most photogenic spots on the island, also made famous by the movie Mamma Mia!, with breathtaking panoramas.

Skopelos beaches

I recommend going in the morning and then finding a nearby beach for swimming. We even found our own cave where we hid comfortably from the sun during midday. There are 106 steps carved into the rock leading to the viewpoint. Sturdy shoes are a must.

7. Chora (Skopelos Town)

The island’s capital is a labyrinth of white houses, chapels, and blooming balconies rising to the ruins of a Venetian castle. Look forward to an authentic Greek atmosphere and beautiful views of the harbor. On the edge, there is a souvenir shop that you’ll appreciate when shopping for gifts to take home, including traditional Greek spices.

8. Panormos Beach

A wide pebble beach in a protected bay surrounded by pine trees, ideal for swimming and relaxation. It’s easily accessible, so expect more people in high season. However, it has pleasant facilities and I must admit that outside the season, when there are minimal tourists, it’s one of the most beautiful places on the island.

  • Skopelos Town–Palouki and Monasteries,
  • Palouki–Archangels–Saint Anna,
  • Skopelos–Saint Constantine–Jelali Spring,
  • Old Klima–Loutraki
  • Loutraki–Glossa.

How to get to Skopelos Island?

Visit Greece provides connections with Mantoudi on Evia and other Sporades ports. There is a flight connection to neighboring Skiathos, with flights from Athens, and in the summer season also from Thessaloniki, plus international charter flights. As I wrote, we flew from Prague to Skiathos in early June and then took the ferry to Skopelos. For me, it’s the easiest route. You can buy ferry tickets online or directly at the port in Skiathos.

Where to eat in Skopelos?

One last gyros in town, near the port, and we’re heading back to Skiathos, from where our plane flies back to Prague. Personally, we rate this June Greek holiday very highly and would love to return here again sometime to take the ferry to other surrounding islands.
