Weather in Mauritius: when to go on holiday

Mauritius is one of our most popular exotic destinations, specifically for a holiday in December. However, turquoise lagoons, coral reefs, and long sandy beaches can lure you in all year round. Still, many travelers write to me before booking their holiday with the typical question: when is the best time to fly to Mauritius and what weather in Mauritius should they expect? The answer isn’t straightforward because the island offers a pleasant climate almost every month. It mainly depends on whether you’re planning on swimming, hiking, or water sports.

Weather in Mauritius

Mauritius has a tropical climate

The weather in Mauritius is influenced by the tropical climate and the Indian Ocean, which keeps temperatures relatively stable throughout the year. On the coast, daily highs range between approximately 24 and 31 °C, and it doesn’t get cold even in the winter months. The sea maintains a temperature between 23 and 28 °C for most of the year, so swimming is possible practically anytime.

Unlike some other tropical regions, there are no significant differences between the individual seasons here. It’s mainly the amount of rainfall, humidity, and wind strength that change.

Summer brings higher temperatures and tropical showers

From November to April, it’s summer in Mauritius. This is when it’s usually the hottest and the air is more humid. Daily temperatures commonly reach 30 °C and the sea is beautifully warm. From our experience, having spent our Christmas holidays here twice, I can say that December, for me, is a more pleasant choice than, say, February.

With higher temperatures comes more rainfall. Tropical showers are most frequent from January to March, but they usually don’t last long. It often rains for just a few dozen minutes and then clears up again. Because of this, most tourists enjoy plenty of sun even during the summer months.

Winter is ideal for an active holiday

From May to October, the Mauritian winter sets in. In reality, however, it feels more like a pleasant European summer. Daily temperatures hover around 24 to 27 °C, humidity is lower, and the weather tends to be more stable.

This period is ideal for exploring the island, hiking, or visiting national parks. Climbing to the top of Le Morne Brabant or hiking in Black River Gorges National Park is much more pleasant thanks to the lower temperatures than during the hot summer. We climbed Le Morne in December and it was also manageable in the morning temperatures.

Which part of the island has the best weather in Mauritius?

One of the interesting things about Mauritius is its distinct microclimate. The weather can change quite quickly over a short distance.

The northern and western coasts are among the driest areas of the island and offer the most sunny days. That’s why you’ll find many famous resorts and luxury hotels here. It’s also why we fell in love with the Le Morne area.

Conversely, the east coast is more influenced by the southeast trade winds. The wind brings a pleasant cooling effect during the summer, but it can be noticeably stronger in the winter months. The central part of the island lies at a higher altitude, so it’s cooler and rains more often.

Should you worry about cyclones?

The cyclone season officially lasts from November to mid-May, with the highest probability of occurrence falling between January and March. However, direct hits on the island are relatively rare.

Modern meteorological services track the development of tropical storms several days in advance, so any necessary measures are taken well ahead of time. Most visitors don’t encounter a cyclone at all during their holiday.

When is the best time to fly to Mauritius – what is the weather like in Mauritius?

If you’re looking for the most stable weather, pleasant temperatures, and lower humidity, the ideal months are May, June, September, October, and November. These months offer excellent conditions for both relaxing on the beach and trips around the island. If you can only travel during the summer months because of school holidays, Mauritius isn’t a bad choice if you don’t mind slightly lower temperatures.

Swimming enthusiasts will still enjoy themselves during the Mauritian summer when the sea is at its warmest. Just keep in mind that short tropical showers may occur, which are completely normal for the weather in Mauritius.
