Bari beaches: 15 most beautiful places to swim in Bari and around
What are the beaches like in Bari? This city isn’t your typical Apulian resort with one long sandy beach. The Bari coastline alternates between sand, pebbles, low rocks, and paved coastal blocks, while a short trip will take you to natural coves towards Giovinazzo, Mola di Bari, and Polignano a Mare. I’ve put together my list of city beaches accessible without a car and smaller coves in the area that are great places to swim in Bari and around.
For families with children, the best options are Pane e Pomodoro, Santo Spirito, Lido San Francesco, and the sandy Porto Cavallo or Porto Contessa. If you’re looking for a quieter and more natural swimming experience, head to Cala San Giorgio, the coast near Giovinazzo, the Cozze area, or the Costa Ripagnola regional park.
Where to stay for swimming in and around Bari?
Find accommodation based on the Bari beaches map:
If you want to combine the historic center with swimming and stay close to the Bari beaches, I recommend the Madonnella district or the southern part of the center near the Lungomare. You can get to Pane e Pomodoro from there on foot or by bus. Santo Spirito is great for a quieter stay by the sea or Torre a Mare. For trips towards Mola di Bari and Polignano a Mare, staying near Bari Centrale is also very practical.
My tip for seaside accommodation in Bari:
Maris Apartment by Tenuta Pinto
- A pleasant apartment about 20 km from the center of Bari
- Nice sea view with good connections to the city

15 best tips if you are looking for beaches in Bari:
1. Pane e Pomodoro
For me, Bari’s most famous city beach is the best choice for families with children without a car. You’ll find both sandy and pebbly sections, easy access to the water, and basic facilities. For the 2026 season, the city is also providing lifeguard services here.

2. Torre Quetta
Torre Quetta lies just south of Pane e Pomodoro and offers more space, a pebbly shore, a promenade, and dining facilities. It’s suitable for families with older children, but also for an afternoon swim and evening drinks by the sea.

3. Waterfront Fesca–San Girolamo
North of the center, you’ll find a landscaped coastline with smaller beach sections and water access points. This place has a much more local atmosphere than Pane e Pomodoro, and the city is providing lifeguards here for the 2026 season.
4. Lido San Francesco alla Rena
If you prefer the comfort of a paid beach club, San Francesco offers sunbeds, umbrellas, a bar, and a restaurant right by the sea. For families, the advantage is the full range of facilities and the possibility to comfortably spend the whole day here.
5. Santo Spirito / Places to swim in Bari
Santo Spirito in northern Bari has a significantly more local vibe. You’ll also find a children’s area, restaurants, cafes, and pedal boat and canoe rentals. Alongside the equipped section, there are also free access points from the rocks.
6. Cala San Giorgio
For me, this is my secret tip for swimming in Bari. This small cove on the southern edge of Bari has a low rocky coastline and a wooden walkway making it easier to enter the sea. It’s quieter than the central beaches, and part of the coast is occupied by a historic beach club with a private sandy section and a pool.
7. Torre a Mare
My next tip for those who like wilder beaches. I recommend Torre a Mare mainly to those who prefer rocks and smaller free access points to the water. The coastline is natural and less “beach-like.” The well-known rocky section called Bunker is more suitable for experienced swimmers than for families with small children.

8. Cala Arena near Giovinazzo
North of Bari, the more rugged coastline of Giovinazzo begins. Cala Arena offers pebbles and a typical low rocky landscape. Compared to the city beaches, expect fewer facilities but a more pleasant local atmosphere.
9. Cala Santo Spiriticchio
Another smaller cove near Giovinazzo is suitable for visitors looking for a quieter and less commercial swimming spot. The shore is mostly rocky and pebbly, so we recommend water shoes and bringing your own snacks.
10. Porto Colombo in Mola di Bari
Mola di Bari has a mostly low rocky coastline, and Porto Colombo is among the most famous swimming spots here. The water is usually quite shallow near the shore, but because of the stony bottom, I recommend water shoes.
11. La Capannina near Cozze / Bari beaches
In the Cozze area, you’ll find small sandy coves alongside the rocks. La Capannina is more pleasant for families than the purely rocky sections, and thanks to its more sheltered location, it’s great for a peaceful half-day by the sea.
12. Costa Ripagnola / Bari beaches
Between Cozze and San Vito stretches the approximately three-kilometer protected coastline of Costa Ripagnola. White limestone cliffs, small coves, caves, and minimal traditional beach infrastructure await you. For us, it’s one of the best choices for nature and peace lovers.
13. Porto Cavallo / Bari beaches
Porto Cavallo near Polignano a Mare is a small sandy cove that I highly recommend for families and children. It fills up quickly in high season, so I suggest packing breakfast to go and arriving early in the morning.

14. Porto Contessa / Bari beaches
Porto Contessa also offers sand and is suitable for families with small children. The advantage is easier entry and an access walkway, but like Porto Cavallo, the cove is small and very popular in July and August.
15. Cala San Giovanni / Bari beaches
If you want the comfort of an equipped beach area, Cala San Giovanni is one of the best family options near Polignano. I recommend this place especially for families with children, and the area is also among the Polignano beaches awarded the 2026 Blue Flag.
What are the best places to swim in Bari and which Bari beaches should you choose?
With small children, we would first choose Pane e Pomodoro, Santo Spirito, Porto Cavallo, Porto Contessa, or Cala San Giovanni. For a more natural swimming experience in Bari, Costa Ripagnola, Cala San Giorgio, and the coast around Mola di Bari and Giovinazzo are better. If you’re only in Bari for a city weekend, there’s no point traveling far for a swim. Pane e Pomodoro and Torre Quetta are, for me, the most practical when you’re looking for a quick swim in Bari.
Interesting fact: According to ARPA Puglia, in 2026, Apulia has 99.9% of monitored bathing waters in the excellent category. Nevertheless, always follow current local signage, especially after heavy rains when swimming may be temporarily restricted. For the rocky Bari beaches, I definitely recommend having water shoes, and with small children, choose places with easier and more gradual entry.
