Portorož, Slovenian coast: 11 tips on what to do and see
Portorož is the liveliest and most luxurious face of the Slovenian coast. It offers a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere and a spa tradition. The Slovenian sea lines the city in a gentle arc, where you’ll find well-maintained beaches, luxury hotels, and cozy cafes that invite you to sit and enjoy the view.
Unlike Piran, Portorož is not about sights, but about the holiday atmosphere. In the morning, you can swim in the calm sea, in the afternoon, take a walk along the promenade, and in the evenings, enjoy a glass of local wine with the scent of salt, which can be felt in the air at every step from the local salt plains.
Portorož promenade Thanks to the easy access to Piran and other cities that the Slovenian sea boasts, nature and nearby wineries, it is an ideal base for travelers who want to enjoy a holiday or a long weekend in the comfort and proximity of interesting places.

During our last vacation in Slovenia, we booked the equally pleasant Hotel Marko for our stay, which pleasantly surprised us with its breakfast offer, even for us celiacs. In good weather, which is almost always here from spring to autumn, it is possible to have breakfast on the terrace, which is literally a natural oasis.

What to do in Portorož?
1. Relax on the beaches of Portorož and its surroundings
The main beach in Portorož is well-maintained, with fine sand, sunbeds and a gradual entry into the sea. Ideal for families as well as for a relaxing day without the need to move. You will find concrete and natural, rocky or pebble beaches here. I dare say that the Slovenian sea offers something for everyone. 2. Wellness and spas with sea salt
Portorož is a traditional spa town. Try treatments using sea water, salt mud and the Mediterranean climate in local spa centers. For more tips on thermal baths and wellness in Slovenia, let yourself be inspired by my separate article:
3. A walk along the coastal promenade
The promenade connecting Portorož with Piran is great not only for an evening walk. You can also enjoy a morning run or bike ride here. It offers views of the sea, cafes and sunsets. I recommend the outdoor cafe on the coast near the Bernardin Hotel. At least have two scoops of ice cream for the road here.

4. A trip to Piran
The historic town with Venetian architecture is one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia. The narrow streets, Tartini Square and the view from the city walls are definitely worth a visit. We also recommend going to the local Pinsa, which they also have in a gluten-free version and which my sister and I absolutely fell in love with. The normal, glutenous one also tasted good to Kája.
5. Sečovlje Salt Pans
A unique nature reserve where salt is still traditionally mined today. You will learn more about the history of this area and see an unusual landscape full of salt flats and birds. One of the local trails leads here. Put on your sneakers and go on a trip. You can swim along the way, on the beach in Lucija (behind the camp).
6. Dinner in a restaurant by the sea
Local cuisine is based on fresh fish, seafood, olive oil and wine. We recommend tasting mussels, squid or other Istrian specialties. And if you don’t like seafood and fish, head to the already mentioned Pinsa in Piran.
7. Boat trip along the coast
The Slovenian sea is not long, so it is not a problem to go on short sightseeing cruises or trips along the coast. For example, by boat to Piran or Izola, which will offer you a different view and a pleasant change to your vacation in Slovenia. You can also book a private cruise from one of the local ports.
8. Casino Portorož
Grand Casino Portorož has a long tradition and although I am against gambling, this place is also an interesting social place with an elegant atmosphere.
9. Active holiday – Slovenian Sea
Water sports, paddleboarding, kayaking or diving are commonly available here. You will also find cycle paths and light hiking trails in the area. Your four-legged friend will not be bored with you either. There is a dog beach and also an agility park directly in Portorož.
10. Vineyards and Istrian villages in the area
A short trip inland will take you among vineyards, stone villages and family wineries.
Nearest options:
-
Koželj Wines Portorose – a small wine shop and winery directly in Portorož, where you can taste local wines.
- Vinakoper – Vinski Boutik (Koper) – for me probably the most famous local winery and operation with a wide range of Slovenian wines.
11. Sunset from the viewpoints above the city
Head to one of the viewpoints above Portorož or towards Piran. Sunsets over the Adriatic are among the most beautiful experiences in the entire area. If I had to mention my favorite viewpoint, it is the city walls in Piran. However, you can also go to the Forma Viva Sculpture Park, which is an outdoor gallery of modern sculptures set in the greenery above the city.
