I’ve prepared 16 of the most interesting places for you to see in Trieste. I’ve included historical monuments, viewpoints, promenades, and spots linked to the city’s rich history. At the very least, Miramare Castle and its park are a must-see for anyone visiting.
1. Piazza Unità d’Italia – Trieste
The largest square in Europe facing the sea and the main hub of Trieste. The monumental space is surrounded by Viennese-style palaces that recall the time when the city was the most important port of the Austrian Empire. The landmark is the Town Hall with its clock tower, and in front of it stands the Fountain of the Four Continents from 1750.
2. Canal Grande – Trieste
A historic canal in the city center that was once an important commercial port. Ships used to sail right into the heart of the city to unload goods. Historic cafes, churches, and elegant palaces from the Habsburg era line the canal.
3. Ponte Rosso and the James Joyce Statue
A bridge over the Canal Grande featuring a bronze statue of the Irish writer James Joyce. Joyce lived and worked in Trieste for fifteen years, and the city significantly influenced his literary work.
4. Miramare Castle
An elegant white castle perched on a cliff above the sea, a few kilometers from the city center. It was built by Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg in 1860 as his residence. Today it serves as a museum with its original interior. For me, it’s one of the top reasons to visit Trieste.
5. Miramare Park – What to see in Trieste
The extensive park surrounding Miramare Castle is among the most beautiful historic gardens in northern Italy. Archduke Maximilian had many exotic trees and plants from various parts of the world planted here.
6. Molo Audace
This stone pier extending about 250 meters into the sea is one of the most popular spots for a stroll. It was originally built in the 18th century on the wreck of a sunken ship. Today it serves as a promenade with a beautiful view of the Gulf of Trieste. Perfect for early evening walks, in my opinion.
7. Teatro Romano
The Roman Theatre from the 1st century is one of the most prominent monuments of ancient Trieste. Located at the foot of San Giusto hill, it once held up to 3,500 spectators. It was only discovered in the 20th century during the demolition of buildings that stood above it.
8. San Giusto – Trieste
San Giusto hill is considered the birthplace of Trieste. Several important monuments are located here, including the cathedral, remains of the Roman forum, and the city fortress.
9. San Giusto Cathedral
The city’s main church dedicated to Saint Justus, the patron saint of Trieste. it was created in the 14th century by joining two older churches. Inside, you can admire mosaics from the 12th century. century.
10. San Giusto Castle – View of Trieste
A medieval fortress that the Habsburgs began building in the 14th century. century. Today it houses a museum dedicated to the city’s history. One of the most beautiful panoramic views of Trieste opens up from the ramparts.
11. Piazza della Borsa
Piazza della Borsa is one of Trieste’s main squares and used to be the center of the city’s commercial and financial life. Today, everyday city life pulses around the neoclassical former stock exchange building from the 19th century, complemented by cafes, shops, and the busy atmosphere of the historic center.

A modern pilgrimage church standing high above the city. It was built in the 1960s as a symbol of peace and gratitude for the city’s salvation during World War II. Its triangular architecture resembles the letter M, symbolizing the Virgin Mary.
13. Napoleon’s Path (Strada Napoleonica) – What to see in Trieste
A panoramic trail carved into the hillside above the city. It offers magnificent views of the Gulf of Trieste and is a favorite route for walkers and cyclists. The path was built by Napoleon’s soldiers.

14. Faro della Vittoria – What to see in Trieste
This monumental lighthouse, 68 meters tall, is among the tallest lighthouses in the world. It was built in the 1920s as a memorial to sailors who fell in World War I. A copper statue of Winged Victory stands at the top.

A long coastal promenade and the city’s main beach. In summer, it’s a popular spot for swimming and relaxing. Parks, bars, and steps leading directly into the sea line the promenade.
16. Pasticceria La Bomboniera
If you love sweets as much as I do, you can’t miss this place at the end of my list of what to see in Trieste. A legendary pastry shop founded in 1836. The interior is reminiscent of old Austrian confectioneries and offers excellent desserts and traditional pastries to go with your coffee. It was no problem to find something gluten-free too.
