A winter fairy tale in the heart of the Austrian Alps. That’s exactly how you can describe a winter trip to Tauplitzalm, one of Austria’s most picturesque ski resorts. This high-altitude plateau, located in the heart of Styria, attracts visitors with breathtaking panoramas, perfectly groomed slopes, and an authentic alpine winter atmosphere. Whether you’re a lover of adrenaline-filled skiing, relaxed cross-country skiing, or peaceful winter walks, Tauplitz offers the ideal setting for all vacationers.

TAUPLITZALM
We personally love returning here in both summer and winter seasons. However, this was our first trip during the off-season, when the summer season had long ended and winter hadn’t yet begun. According to the weather forecast, I knew that fresh snow had fallen here and the sun was supposed to shine for the weekend. Everything was confirmed, and we were surprised by an almost deserted Tauplitzalm.

We paid 14 EUR by card for the Alpenstrasse at the entrance and drove comfortably up the well-maintained road to the upper parking lots, which are usually occupied during peak season, so people park along the road. This time, about five cars were parked with us in the main parking lot, three of which were completely snowed in from the night’s snowfall, making it clear that they were either staying at Tauplitzalm, owned one of the chalets, or worked there.

We were also lucky with the preparation of winter hiking trails. Throughout the area, routes were being actively prepared for both hikers and cross-country skiers, and the slopes were already being covered with snow so the resort would be perfectly prepared for this year’s winter season launch. Hotels were stocking up, general cleaning and minor renovations were taking place, so you can look forward to spending a beautiful winter vacation here.

ACCOMMODATION in Tauplitz
Whether you’re a lover of skiing, snowboarding, or cross-country skiing, or you’re simply attracted to winter vacations and walks in snowy landscapes, Tauplitz is the perfect place. Skiers will certainly appreciate being literally a few meters from the hotel to the lifts, hikers will be thrilled with the groomed trails offering breathtaking views, and cross-country skiers won’t be able to get enough of the groomed tracks around the entire resort.

I recommend not delaying with reservations, as the best hotel rooms and the most beautiful chalets are usually booked well in advance.
We personally have experience with Hotel Hierzegger, which is located right in the heart of Tauplitzalm, just below the slopes. After breakfast, you just need to put on your skis and you’re at the lift. The only thing you need to keep in mind when booking a hotel in the resort is that you’ll have to leave your car parked in the parking lot, and from there they’ll take you to the hotel by snowmobile or mini-groomer. Personally, I see this more as an advantage and an extra experience.

We decided to walk through Tauplitzalm, as far as the groomed trails would take us, and we made it parallel to Lake Steirersee. Unfortunately, the path to the popular viewpoint above the lake hadn’t been cleared yet, and since the snow was knee-deep, we chose the second trail back and walked around the resort to the other side, where we usually only venture during summer months when we go on the 6-lake hike.
