5 tips for the best beaches in Estepona, the promenade, and the harbor

Beaches in Estepona: where to go for a swim

Beaches in Estepona: Estepona has one big advantage—the sea here is truly part of the city. You don’t have to travel far to go for a swim. The main beach is right by the center, and other interesting beaches can be found within walking distance or a short drive.

1. Playa de La Rada: the main city beach

Playa de La Rada is the most famous beach in Estepona. It lies right by the center, along a long promenade, and is the most practical choice for most visitors. It has a well-maintained promenade as well as gardens and palm trees. There is easy access and services available. La Rada is ideal if you want to have everything at hand. Thanks to its location, it’s the best beach for those of you staying in the center or who don’t want to use a car.

The beach is long, urban, and lively. In high season, don’t expect a deserted stretch of coast, but a well-equipped beach with a resort atmosphere. You’ll appreciate it especially if you’re traveling with children or want to be close to toilets, restaurants, showers, and cafes.

2. Playa del Cristo: among the best beaches in Estepona for kids

If I had to pick one beach in Estepona for families with smaller children, it would be Playa del Cristo. It lies west of the harbor in a small protected bay, and thanks to the calmer water, it’s perfect for a relaxing swim.

Playa del Cristo is a smaller and quiet sandy beach with a darker type of sand, calm waters, a length of 700 meters, and services including showers, toilets, sunbed and umbrella rentals, and a playground. It’s a city beach near the harbor that forms a nice bay protected from the wind. In my opinion, Playa del Cristo is the most chill choice for an afternoon with the kids. The water tends to be calmer than on more open beaches, and the bay feels cozier. The downside is that it’s popular in season, so it pays to arrive early.

3. Playa El Saladillo / Beaches in Estepona

If you want to try a beach outside the center, check out Playa El Saladillo. An urban beach with dark sand, 3,000 meters long, moderate waves, and services including sunbed and umbrella rentals, toilets, showers, cleaning, and a playground.

It’s especially suitable if you’re staying in this part of Estepona or want to swap the urban La Rada for a longer coastal stretch away from the center itself.

4. Playa El Padrón

Playa El Padrón lies east of the center and is another of Estepona’s well-known beaches. It’s a good tip if you’re spending more days in the city and want to get to know other parts of the coast.

5. Playa Costa Natura

Finally, I’ll mention the most popular beach if you’re heading to Estepona as a couple and like naturist beaches. Playa Costa Natura is popular as a naturist beach, which I wouldn’t include in a regular family itinerary, but if you look for such beaches, it can be an interesting tip.

Promenade and harbor in Estepona: the nicest evening walk

One of the most pleasant places in Estepona, in my opinion, is the coastal promenade. It runs along La Rada beach and connects the city area with the harbor. In the morning you’ll meet runners and locals, in the evening families with children, couples on a romantic walk, and tourists heading for dinner.

However, you’ll also appreciate the Estepona promenade for its practicality. Thanks to it, you can walk through the city without any problems. You won’t have to constantly deal with parking or moving by car. Just go down to the sea and slowly walk to where you want to go and where you need to get to.

Puerto Deportivo

On the west side of the city lies Puerto Deportivo, which is the marina. It’s a great place for an evening walk, a drink, or dinner. You’ll find boats, pleasant bars, and above all, excellent restaurants with a lovely Spanish atmosphere.

My tip: A market with traditional products and handmade goods is held at the harbor every Sunday. If you’re in Estepona over the weekend, I definitely recommend going to check it out on Sunday.
