Nerja: Why plan a weekend or a longer vacation here
Nerja lies on the eastern edge of the Málaga province coast, in the La Axarquía region, and there are several reasons why you should plan a vacation here. For me, it’s mainly the beautiful beaches, white Andalusian houses, cliff views, great facilities for families with children, as well as Cueva de Nerja and the natural scenery towards Maro. Look forward to a town with a coastline made up of beaches, coves, and cliffs where you can swim, relax, and enjoy water sports.

A town with a view – Balcón de Europa
The heart of Nerja is the Balcón de Europa, a viewpoint jutting out over the sea, offering one of the most beautiful views of the coast. On one side, you’ll see the turquoise Mediterranean Sea, below you smaller beaches tucked between rocks, and behind you the white alleys of the old town. Personally, I rank Balcón de Europa among the most impressive Spanish viewpoints, and I must mention the legend of King Alfonso XII, who is said to have given the place its current name.
I recommend starting your walk through town right here. From the viewpoint, you can continue into the center with its cafes, shops, and alleys lined with white facades, flowers, and colorful doors. Nerja is lively enough to offer restaurants, bars, and services, but it still keeps the atmosphere of a seaside Andalusian town, which is what I like about it.
Beaches in Nerja
One of the main reasons I wanted to head to Nerja is the beaches. If you’re looking for comfortable swimming with facilities, head to Playa de Burriana. It’s a very popular beach for families with children, with a nice environment, good access, and quality services. It’s a beach where you’ll find restaurants, snack options, sports activities, and plenty of space for a classic day by the sea.
Near the center, you’ll also find the beaches Calahonda, El Salón, Torrecilla, or La Caletilla. Calahonda is popular mainly due to its location right below Balcón de Europa. It’s smaller, photogenic, and you’ll appreciate it for a quick swim during a walk through town. La Caletilla has good facilities, and you can enjoy diving as well as beautiful coastal views here.
If you prefer a more natural atmosphere, you should head towards Maro. The coast here turns into a wilder landscape with rocks, cliffs, and smaller coves. I’ll mention La Caleta, Cala Barranco de Maro, or Calas del Pino, for example. These beaches feel less urban to me and are ideal for those who want to combine swimming with a trip.
A trip to Cueva de Nerja
If you don’t want to lie by the sea all day, one of the biggest attractions is Cueva de Nerja, a vast cave complex near the Maro district. For 2026, the standard opening hours are 9:15 AM – 4:30 PM, extended to 5:30 PM in summer and selected periods. At the same time, I recommend checking the current visiting times before your trip.

Definitely plan your cave visit for a whole morning or afternoon. You’ll find parking, a bus stop, the option to use the tourist train from Nerja, and other visitor services on-site. It’s a pleasant program for families that you can combine, for example, with a walk through Maro or a subsequent swim at one of the nearby beaches.

Nerja with kids
Nerja is a good choice for a family vacation too. The easiest combination is accommodation within walking distance of the center or Burriana; you can enjoy swimming in the morning and head out on shorter trips in the afternoon. Besides the beaches, Parque Verano Azul is worth mentioning—a city park linked to the famous Spanish series Verano Azul. You’ll also find a replica of the boat La Dorada, sports facilities, and a children’s section of the park here.
The advantage of Nerja is that you don’t have to overthink your schedule. You can dedicate one day to Burriana, the second to the cave and Maro, and another to a walk through the center and the smaller beaches below Balcón de Europa. This makes it easy to travel here even with kids who don’t like long car rides to further excursions.

Go for paella by the sea
Food definitely belongs to a vacation in Nerja. The most famous establishment connected to Burriana beach is Chiringuito Ayo. It is a family beach bar that I would describe as a place famous for paella prepared over a wood fire. Plan an informal stop here, even after swimming. Don’t expect a luxury restaurant, but a pleasant place with a seaside atmosphere.
In general, expect fish, seafood, tapas, cold Andalusian soups, and wines from the Málaga region in Nerja. You’ll find more touristy restaurants in the center, while establishments with simple Mediterranean cuisine and sea views prevail by the beaches.
Who Nerja is ideal for
Nerja is ideal for those of you who are planning a seaside vacation but don’t want to just stay by the hotel pool. You’ll appreciate it as a peaceful getaway for a couple, as a family with children, or if you like to alternate between swimming in the sea, walks, trips, and good food. Don’t expect a place with monumental sights on every corner, but look forward to the sea, cliffs, breathtaking views, Andalusian atmosphere, and easily accessible activities.
If you’re planning a vacation on the Costa del Sol and looking for a town that will charm you with its atmosphere, has a beautiful coastline, and plenty of services, Nerja is a very good choice. Even a long weekend is enough to understand why many visitors love to return here. For me, it’s the morning walks to Balcón de Europa, swimming in clean water, trips to Maro, and evenings in the alleys and coastal restaurants.
