Hinterstoder and Wurzeralm: 2 ski resorts in Upper Austria
Hinterstoder and Wurzeralm are two popular ski resorts in Upper Austria that will pleasantly surprise you. If you are looking for skiing in Upper Austria that is easily accessible from the Czech Republic while offering slopes for both children and experienced skiers, I recommend trying the Hinterstoder and Wurzeralm area.
Both of these ski resorts in Upper Austria belong to the Pyhrn-Priel region and are operated by the same lift company, but they are not connected by slopes. Hinterstoder is larger, more athletic, and features World Cup runs, while Wurzeralm is smaller and, in my opinion, even more pleasant for families with children.

Hotel Sperlhof near Windischgarsten
- I recommend this accommodation if you want to alternate between the Wurzeralm and Hinterstoder ski resorts during your stay.

Hinterstoder skiing: 40 km of slopes and a World Cup run
Hinterstoder offers a total of 40 km of slopes at altitudes ranging from 600 to 2,000 meters. This includes 12 km of blue runs, 18 km of red runs, and a very respectable 10 km of black runs. There are 14 lifts and cable cars available, and approximately 90% of the slopes can be covered with artificial snow.
For families with smaller children, I especially recommend Hutterer Böden at an altitude of around 1,400 meters. You’ll find the Sunny Kids Park here with magic carpets, practice lifts, and a ski carousel. For children who already ski independently, the 3.5 km long Familienabfahrt No. 3 is great, or the Schulliftpisten No. 14. A more fun alternative is the SNOWtrail at Hirschkogel with waves and banked turns.
In my opinion, intermediate skiers will enjoy Hinterstoder the most. You can try the Standardabfahrt No. 6, the two-kilometer Carvingpiste, or the Panoramapiste No. 13.

The Höss Totale is also an excellent all-day goal
- It is the longest run in the resort.
- It measures 7.4 km and leads from a height of 2,000 meters all the way down to Hinterstoder.
And even very good skiers won’t be bored here. The World Cup slope Hannes Trinkl is 3.5 km long and reaches a gradient of up to 60% in the steepest sections. An even bigger challenge is the Inferno Piste with a maximum gradient of around 70%. Hinterstoder is, after all, the only World Cup resort in Upper Austria.

Wurzeralm: a smaller family ski resort near Spital am Pyhrn
Wurzeralm offers 22 km of slopes from 810 to 1,870 meters, with 10 km of blue, 10 km of red, and 2 km of black runs. You get up there via a funicular from Spital am Pyhrn, and chairlifts and T-bars operate directly within the ski resort.
For your children’s first skiing experience, I recommend the Sunny Kids Park with its magic carpet, rope lift, and ski carousel. Children who can already turn safely will enjoy the Junior Jet area, where you’ll find a wave run, a “snake” run, and a timed WISBI section. The area also offers the Bärenachter family circuit.
For intermediate skiers, the 4.5 km long Gammeringabfahrt or the 3.5 km long Frauenkarabfahrt are definitely worth a try. There are fewer challenging groomed runs than in Hinterstoder, but Frauenkar is also known as a local freeride hotspot. So, if you’re going mainly for athletic skiing, I would choose Hinterstoder. For families with children and for a calmer multi-day stay, Wurzeralm has the edge in my opinion.

Hinterstoder and Wurzeralm: Ski pass and opening hours 2026/2027
Hinterstoder plans daily operation from November 28, 2026, to April 4, 2027. The Hössbahn runs from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM and the Höss-Express from 8:45 AM to 4:00 PM.
Wurzeralm has a planned season from December 8, 2026, to March 29, 2027. The funicular operates from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, mountain lifts from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and Frauenkar until 3:30 PM.
Dynamic pricing is used for standard ski passes, so the earlier you buy online, the better the price usually is. The price changes based on the date, occupancy, and the moment of booking. For guidance, at the start of the pre-sale, a one-day online ski pass for Hinterstoder started at approximately €44.50 and for Wurzeralm from €41.
In my opinion, it’s worth combining both resorts into one holiday: keep Hinterstoder for more athletic days and long descents, while I recommend Wurzeralm mainly for families with children and for more relaxed skiing. These two ski resorts in Upper Austria are also ideal for winter long weekends of at least 2–3 nights.

News for the 2026/27 season
In Hinterstoder, a modernization of the Höss-Express control technology took place in 2026, with approximately 1.5 million euros invested in this and other adjustments. Wurzeralm invested roughly 3.5 million euros. The biggest change is a new storage pond at Frauenkar with a volume of 45,000 m³, which will improve snowmaking on the slopes there. The Gammering Lift also received modernized controls.
