Strasbourg Christmas Markets 2026: Dates, What to See, and Where to Stay
Strasbourg Christmas Markets thrilled us because it’s not just one square with stalls, but practically the entire historic center wrapped in a Christmas atmosphere that you can look forward to. The half-timbered houses in Petite France are covered in lights and garlands, the illuminated cathedral towers over the city, and you can easily walk between the individual markets on foot.
Did you know? Strasbourg definitely didn’t come up with the nickname “Capital of Christmas” by accident. The local Christkindelsmärik has been held since 1570 and is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe.

Where to stay during the Christmas markets in Strasbourg
If you are heading to Strasbourg mainly for the Advent season, I recommend staying directly on Grande Île. Selected hotels have good walking distance to the cathedral, Place Kléber, and Petite France. Here are my three recommendations:
Hôtel Beaucour ****
✅ Romantic hotel in a typical Alsatian house, just a few minutes from the cathedral and Petite France

VIEW AVAILABILITY
Hôtel Gutenberg ****
✅ Right in the historic center, approximately 200 meters from the cathedral
✅ Stylish boutique hotel, some rooms have a view of the Notre-Dame tower

Strasbourg Christmas Markets – What to see here?
Christkindelsmärik at Place Broglie
The oldest part of the Strasbourg Advent can be found at Place Broglie. Christkindelsmärik was established back in 1570 and moved to its current location in the 19th century. I recommend heading here first. You’ll find classic crafts, decorations, Alsatian specialties, and the traditional atmosphere that brings visitors from all over Europe to Strasbourg during December.
Place Kléber and the giant Christmas tree – Strasbourg Christmas Markets
The biggest symbol of Christmas is the Grand Sapin at Place Kléber, a Christmas tree approximately thirty meters tall. For the 2026 season, the tourist office has already confirmed its return, and it is set to light up regularly to music every day between 4:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
Under the tree, there is also the Village du Partage, where charitable and non-profit organizations take turns. Try the Soupe de l’Étoile here, for example, a soup created by local chefs for charity projects.

Markets by the Notre-Dame Cathedral
One of the places I definitely wouldn’t miss is the area around Cathédrale Notre-Dame and Place du Château. The stalls also continue into Rue Gutenberg and Rue des Hallebardes. If you have the energy, climb the 332 steps to the cathedral’s viewing platform at a height of 66 meters; the view of the illuminated city and the Strasbourg Christmas markets is well worth it.
Petite France and local producers – Advent in Strasbourg
In my opinion, Petite France is the most beautiful spot for an evening stroll. You’ll find markets at Place Benjamin Zix and Place Saint-Thomas among the half-timbered houses and the canals of the Ill River. Additionally, in Square Louise Weiss, local producers sell jams, biodynamic Alsatian wines, hot apple cider, chocolate, and traditional bredle.
- For families, there is also the Village de l’Avent with creative workshops, fairy tales, and concerts. Activities are free and no reservation is required.

Strasbourg Christmas Markets – what to taste here?
Strasbourg is mainly about mulled wine with spices and citrus, bredle, kougelhopf, and other Alsatian specialties. On Quai des Délices, regional producers, winemakers, bakers, and restaurateurs gather, so if you want to taste something truly local instead of the usual “Christmas fast food,” start right here.

What are bredle?
Bredle are traditional Alsatian Christmas cookies, similar to our small Christmas sweets. It’s not just one specific type. The name bredle covers a whole range of small biscuits and cookies. For example, butter, cinnamon, almond, anise, or nut varieties. In Alsace, they are baked mainly during Advent and are often served with coffee, tea, or mulled wine.
Practical tips for the Strasbourg Christmas markets
I recommend setting aside at least one full day, ideally two nights, for the entire Advent circuit. According to the city, Mondays, Tuesdays, and mornings are the quietest. The biggest crowds naturally come on Friday evenings and weekends. The historic Grande Île is restricted for car traffic during the markets, so it’s more practical to use P+R and continue by tram.
If you only have one day, walk through Place Broglie – the Cathedral – Place Kléber – Petite France. I believe this combination of several different marketplaces, historical backdrops, and typical Alsatian gastronomy will entertain you just as much as it did me. Strasbourg is a place I would happily visit again for the Christmas atmosphere.
