Weather in Sri Lanka: when to go on holiday

In my opinion, Sri Lanka is one of the most diverse exotic destinations in Asia. Personally, I’ve already written a lot about this fairytale country, and today we’ll talk about what is weather in Sri Lanka like and in which months. On this relatively small island, you’ll find tropical beaches, tea plantations, mountain scenery, national parks, and historic UNESCO World Heritage cities.

When planning a holiday, however, many travelers are surprised by one thing: in Sri Lanka, there isn’t a single best period for the entire island. The weather here is influenced by two monsoons that hit different parts of the country at different times. Thanks to this, it’s possible to find sunny weather practically any time of the year.

Weather in Sri Lanka? Tropical climate all year round

Sri Lanka lies just a few degrees north of the equator, which is why it has a tropical climate with high temperatures year-round. On the coast, daily highs usually range between 28 and 32 °C, while the sea maintains a pleasant temperature of around 27 to 29 °C.

In higher altitudes, the climate is significantly cooler. For example, in the mountain town of Nuwara Eliya, which sits at nearly 1,900 meters, mornings can be surprisingly crisp and temperatures can drop below 10 °C in the winter months. A waterproof windbreaker will definitely come in handy here.

Sri Lanka: Two monsoons determine the best time to travel

Unlike many other tropical destinations, Sri Lanka isn’t affected by just one rainy season. The island is hit by two different monsoons.

The southwest monsoon lasts approximately from May to September and brings the most rainfall to the southwest coast, around Colombo, Galle, Mirissa, and the mountain regions.

Conversely, the northeast monsoon affects the northern and eastern parts of the island from December to February. Because of this, it never rains everywhere at once, and there’s always a region with very favorable weather. Personally, we visited Sri Lanka twice during the spring months and, except for a few exceptions inland, we couldn’t complain about the weather during our nearly month-long holidays.

When to head to the south and west of the island based on the weather in Sri Lanka

If you’re planning to visit the most famous resorts like Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa, or the historic city of Galle, the ideal period is between December and April.

That’s when sunny weather prevails, the sea is usually calm, and conditions are excellent for swimming, snorkeling, and whale-watching trips. It’s no surprise that this is also the peak tourist season.

From May to September, the tables turn. While the southwest of the island is affected by the monsoon, the east coast offers mostly sunny weather.

The areas of Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah, or Arugam Bay are among the best places for a beach holiday during this period. The calm sea is great for snorkeling and diving, and Arugam Bay ranks among the most famous surfing destinations in Asia.

Weather in Sri Lanka

As I’ve already written, the spring months, March and April, are considered transitional, and with a bit of luck, you can count on pleasant weather practically all over the island; at least that was our experience during both holidays when we traveled across almost the entire island.

Sri Lanka: Rain doesn’t mean a ruined holiday

Although people often talk about the rainy season, in reality, most showers don’t last long. Typical are short, intense downpours, after which it clears up again within a few hours.

Furthermore, the weather can vary significantly even over relatively short distances. While it might be raining on the coast, it could be sunny just a few dozen kilometers away. That’s why it’s good to plan your route according to the current season of each region when traveling around Sri Lanka. Personally, I planned our last holiday in Sri Lanka exactly according to the last-minute weather forecast, which really paid off for us.

When is the best time to fly to Sri Lanka? What weather to expect in Sri Lanka?

There isn’t a single month that’s ideal for the whole island. It mainly depends on where you’re heading.

For the southwest coast, it’s best to go between December and April. If you’re drawn to the east coast, the weather is beautiful there from May to September. Mountain areas like Kandy, Ella, or Nuwara Eliya can be visited almost year-round, you just have to expect more variable weather and lower temperatures.

Can you only travel during the summer holidays? Then choose the east and north coasts for your holiday on the island. Arugam Bay, Trincomalee, Nilaveli, or Kalkudah will pleasantly surprise you.

It’s precisely the diverse climate that makes the island of Sri Lanka an exceptionally interesting destination. Whether you come here for the beaches, tea plantations, safaris, or exploring historical monuments, with the right timing, you’ll enjoy pleasant tropical weather and plenty of sunny days.
