What to do in Fuerteventura
What to do in Fuerteventura? There is sure to be something for everyone. In terms of size, Fuerteventura is the second largest and longest of all the Canary Islands. Its area is approximately 1660 m2, and the adjacent island of Lobos is also considered part of Fuerteventura. You can look forward to beautiful, bright beaches here.
Yellow and white sand are the most common here. The airport is located approximately 5 kilometers from the capital, Puerto del Rosario, and a direct flight from Germany will take 5 hours, and you no longer have to transfer from the Czech Republic. Direct flights are offered, for example, with Smartwings or ČSA. The highest point of the island of Fuerteventura is Pico de la Zarza (812 m).
Accommodation in Fuerteventura
As a base for trips to Fuerteventura, vacationers most often choose lively Corralejo in the north of the island. You will find beaches, dunes, bars and trips to the nearby island of Lobos, or even to Lanzarote. The family resort of Caleta de Fuste in the middle of the island and the southern Costa Calma and Jandía / Morro Jable with the endless beaches of Sotavento will, I believe, entertain you as much as us.
For peace and a slower pace, head to El Cotillo, which is a northwestern fishing village with atmosphere and lagoons. We personally like to go here for food. La Pared is a more dramatic west coast and you will find surfing peace here. Or stay in Las Playitas, which stands out with its comfortable bays and sports resort.

In terms of tourism, local beaches and ideal winds are popular not only with surfers, but also with kitesurfing and windsurfing enthusiasts. Let yourself be tempted to take a vacation and get inspired by my trips to Fuerteventura:
What to do in Fuerteventura?
Whether you have come to the island for a sports vacation, or you are looking forward to relaxing here undisturbed, my tips what to do in Fuerteventura will surely come in handy during your stay. You will certainly find other beautiful places to visit, but I have selected the ones that appealed to me the most and thanks to which you will be able to get to know the island far and wide and take a look beyond its borders.
1. El Cottilo and its beaches / Fuerteventura
The town of El Cottilo on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura was the first coast I got to know here and I believe that its visit should not be missing from your list for trips to Fuerteventura. It won me over not only with its atmosphere of an old fishing village, but also with the beautiful beaches that seemed to have ended up here by mistake.
Prepare for almost Caribbean bays with fine white sand, which elegantly contrast with black lava rocks. Because most of the lagoons there are shallow, El Cottilo beaches are a popular place even during the winter months, when you can pleasantly warm up here during sunny days.

You should also stay in El Cottilo for dinner. I personally recommend the Azzuro Chill Out restaurant and my favorite Paella (min. for 2 people).
2. Faro del Tostón Lighthouse / Fuerteventura
If you are a lover of lighthouses, then the island of Fuerteventura will offer you several of them. One of them is offered if you have included the aforementioned town of El Cottilo among your trips to Fuerteventura. You can plan a several-hour hike to the Faro del Tostón Lighthouse, or you can get here more comfortably by bike or car. In good weather, be sure to bring a towel and swimsuit, you will come across several romantic lagoons along the way to relax. Depending on how far you go along the coast, you will have a secluded lagoon.
3. The city of Corralejo / Fuerteventura
You will enjoy the city of Corralejo in the north of the island. I can’t judge how busy it is since the onset of the coronavirus, but it is usually a vibrant and pleasant tourist spot where you will definitely not be bored. Not only are walks along the promenade popular among trips to Fuerteventura, but be sure to stop in the streets of Corralejo for some good tapas and coffee with a view.
Personally, Corralejo was too busy a place for me to accommodate us here, but we always went here for shopping. From the city, you can go directly on foot to the local beaches. Not only during the winter months, you will certainly use their traditional nooks against the wind built of stone.

4. Flag Beach and Corallejo / What to do in Fuerteventura
Whether you enjoy wind sports such as kitesurfing and windsurfing, or are looking for a great place to relax and like to watch the waves, then you should definitely not stay only in the center of Corralejo. Go for a walk, pack your swimsuit and a snack for the beach. Or arrange a kitesurfing course right away, or just rent equipment and your active and relaxing vacation can begin.

5. Sand dunes of Corralejo / What to do in Fuerteventura
The area of sand dunes near the city of Corralejo is one of the main attractions for which many tourists fly to the island of Fuerteventura. I must admit that it really is an impressive place, from which you will leave with sand blown absolutely everywhere. I recommend stopping in a secluded place to enjoy the dunes just for yourself.
Corralejo sand dunes are among the popular stops for Fuerteventura, organized by travel agencies and local tour operators. The moment you come across such a trip, it is better to move a little further so that the roaring tourists do not spoil your impression of such a beautiful place.

6. Lobos Island / What to do in Fuerteventura
The adjacent island of Lobos is literally a natural paradise for your vacation days. If you are staying around Corralejo and are looking for trips to Fuerteventura where you don’t have to travel far, this tip is great for you. Boats leave from the port at regular intervals and on the island of Lobos, in addition to relaxing on the coast, you can go on various challenging hikes.
7. Lanzarote Island
If the island of Fuerteventura is already small for you, or if you want to take advantage of all the excursion options that are offered to you in the city of Corralejo, you should definitely also go to the nearby island of Lanzarote. For a perfect enjoyment of visiting the neighboring island, I recommend at least 1-3 nights, but the trip can also be planned as a day trip. More about the island of Lanzarote sometime next time.
8. Mirador de Moro Velosa Lookout / What to do in Fuerteventura
There are many lookouts that trips to Fuerteventura can bring you to. I chose the one that appealed to us the most. The very journey to Mirador de Moro Velosa is an experience. Be sure to stop at the information rest stops along the way, where you can often learn interesting facts from the history of the island.
Right at the top you will have a breathtaking view of the entire island of Fuerteventura and be prepared that if it is windy down below, you will hold on here so that you literally don’t fly away.
9. La Oliva surroundings / Fuerteventura
The surroundings of La Oliva in the interior are literally an open-air museum of rural life in Fuerteventura. In addition to the fact that you will come across goats at every step, which graze here in abundance and it can be said that they are an iconic animal on the island, you should also pay attention to the historical windmills.
Mountain scenery complemented by these buildings will surely be a great catch for your travel photos. In local shops and at the farmers themselves, be sure to buy and taste the local traditional cheeses, which are made from goat’s milk.
10. Sotavento Beach / What to do in Fuerteventura
Do you prefer an active vacation? Are you a fan of kitesurfing and windsurfing? If so, then you will be pleased that I have included this Sotavento lagoon among my favorite trips to Fuerteventura. Just like for professional athletes, it is also an ideal place for beginners due to its size.
If it really blows somewhere, then it’s here. Even if the owners of schools in Corralejo will claim that the best places for these sports are right on their coast. Well, test it and let me know where you kited best.

11. Playa Esmeralda / What to do in Fuerteventura
A beautiful beach, to which you will have only a few steps from the hotel. An ideal place for those vacationers who fly to Fuerteventura mainly to relax on the beach. Sunbeds and umbrellas are a matter of course on the beach. However, we rather enjoyed a large part of this long beach away from the sunbeds just for ourselves and we even jumped into the waves, when the water was about 19 degrees. Which is such an ideal preparation for our spring trips to the Austrian lakes.

12. West coast – Aguas Verdes
The dramatic coast in the west of the island of Fuerteventura is a great tip especially for surfing enthusiasts. However, the village of Ajuy and the resort of Aguas Verdes is my secret tip for all vacationers who do not like busy tourist resorts. You should not miss a visit to Playa de las Muertes here. The local coast is also an ideal place for long walks along the coast.
13. Caleta de Fuste / What to do in Fuerteventura
Caleta de Fuste is a popular tourist resort not far from the airport. Accommodation is offered here in luxurious city hotels and the place is also popular for short stays after arrival and before departure. Walks along the tourist promenade are pleasant here and it is definitely worth visiting the local Salinas, from where you can bring a souvenir in the form of salt.
14. The bustling coast of Morro Jable
Morro Jable is another popular tourist area, this time in the southern part of the island of Fuerteventura. The city beach stretches parallel to the tourist promenade and it is almost the same no matter where you stay here, you will always be almost the same distance from the beach. The symbol of the resort is the lighthouse, which will majestically welcome you from afar.
Moro Jable is also a great starting point for trips to Fuerteventura in the southern part of the island and especially if you plan to visit the breathtaking Cofete beach.

15. The city of Betancuria / What to do in Fuerteventura
Betancuria was the capital of the island of Fuerteventura until 1834. Currently, it is a historical city with a pleasant atmosphere of the past, which is definitely worth visiting during your trips. The Franciscan monastery Monasterio de San Buenaventura, which has stood here since the 15th century and you will certainly not miss it from the road, is worth your attention.
16. Cofete Beach / What to do in Fuerteventura
Playa de Cofete is, in my opinion, the most magical beach on the island of Fuerteventura. I deliberately left this tip until the end to live up to the saying “save the best for last”. You can get to Cofete beach by rented car or quad bike. I recommend choosing a car that will not betray you halfway and have good insurance.
It is not for nothing that you will learn from the locals that Cofete beach is a reward. Prepare for a trip of more than 20 kilometers, with approximately the last 8 kilometers you will be bumping over a stony road. During that route, you will be waiting for breathtaking views of the dramatic coast, and therefore prepare for the fact that the journey itself will take you longer than you initially planned.
You will surely agree with me that it would be a shame not to stop at these rest stops and enjoy the literally divine views.
Cofete beach is not a beach in the sense of swimming and other traditional beach fun. However, you can look forward to a long walk. You can easily forget your swimsuit in the car and you will certainly be able to jump into the waves from the edge of the coast.
And now all that remains for me is to wish you a wonderful vacation and successful trips to Fuerteventura!
