Zagreb Christmas Markets 2026: Dates, Program, and Verified Hotels

Zagreb Christmas Markets: Dates, What to See, and Where to Stay

Do you want to combine the Advent atmosphere this year with a city where the Christmas program isn’t just in one square? Zagreb Christmas Markets are among the most interesting in Central Europe precisely because the entire historic city center transforms into several connected Advent zones. What interesting things does this year’s Advent Zagreb offer?

You can look forward to illuminated parks, stalls with Croatian specialties, music, views from the Upper Town, and traditionally a large ice rink. So, who said people only go to Croatia in the summer?

Official Advent Zagreb takes place this year from November 28, 2026, to January 7, 2027. Additionally, the city has allowed a so-called warm-up from November 25–27, 2026, when individual locations can start operating before the grand opening. So, if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, you can head to Zagreb even before the main Christmas season begins.

Where to stay during Advent in Zagreb

For a Christmas weekend, I recommend Donji Grad between Ban Jelačić Square and the main railway station. From there, we easily walked to the main Advent locations, Zrinjevac, and Tomislav Square.

Zagreb Christmas Markets – where are they held?

Don’t expect Advent Zagreb to be just another classic Christmas market. The city has designated several spots in the center for the Christmas season. For stalls and gastronomy, it primarily counts on Trg bana Josipa Jelačića, Gajeva, and Bogovićeva streets. Among the Advent locations are also European Square, Plato Gradec, and Strossmayer Promenade. Separate tenders were also issued for the parks Zrinjevac, Strossmayer Square, and King Tomislav Square.

Trg bana Josipa Jelačića – starting right in the heart of the city

Zagreb’s main square is the ideal point from which I recommend starting your Advent walk. This is also where the largest Christmas tree and one of the main festive zones are usually located. The square is officially among the locations designated for seasonal sales and gastronomy. From here, it’s just a few minutes to Zrinjevac and the streets of the Upper Town.

Zrinjevac and Tomislav Square – Zagreb Christmas Markets

For me, the elegant Zrinjevac park has long been one of the most romantic places in Advent Zagreb. In past years, live music played around the historic pavilion, and thousands of lights shone among the plane trees. Zrinjevac is among the official park locations again this year.

The same goes for Trg kralja Tomislava in front of the Art Pavilion. This is exactly where the popular Ledeni park was located in previous seasons, a large Advent ice rink accessible at regular times.

Upper Town: Gradec and Strossmayer Promenade

If you want a romantic evening atmosphere, head to Gornji Grad. For Advent Zagreb 2026, the city has once again offered Plato Gradec and both parts of the Strossmayer Promenade. In previous years, light installations, bars, and more intimate Advent projects were created here. I recommend combining your visit with St. Mark’s Church and the Lotrščak Tower.

What to see besides the markets – Zagreb Christmas Markets?

From the main square, you can climb up to the Stone Gate and St. Mark’s Church, walk through the streets of Gornji Grad, and return in the evening via the Strossmayer Promenade. During the day, the Dolac market just above Jelačić Square is also worth a visit. In a single day, you can manage and enjoy historic Zagreb, local gastronomy, and the evening Christmas decorations.

What to taste at the Advent markets?

Personally, I was surprised by how gastronomic Advent Zagreb is. Besides mulled wine, try sarma with mashed potatoes, makovnjača, or spiced paprenjaci cookies. These are among the typical flavors for Christmas in Zagreb.

  • Unfortunately, I didn’t find a gluten-free version, but the gluten ones are said to be very good.

Practical tips for Advent Zagreb 2026

Allow at least one full day for the main locations, but two nights are ideal. The route Ban Jelačić – Zrinjevac – Tomislav Square can be easily covered on foot, and spend the second evening in the Upper Town. On December weekends, expect the largest number of visitors after dark.

A big advantage of Zagreb is that Advent doesn’t end on Christmas Eve. It continues through New Year’s Eve until January 7, 2027, making it an interesting choice for a post-Christmas or New Year’s stay. Personally, we combined Advent Zagreb and the Christmas markets in Slovenia, which I also recommend visiting:
