Resorts in the Maldives: 14 affordable accommodations without a travel agency
The Maldives isn’t just a destination for an unlimited budget. I’ve selected 14 tips for highly-rated and popular resorts in the Maldives at an affordable price. I’ve included cheaper and mid-range resorts with excellent ratings according to Booking.com, which will catch your eye with beautiful beaches, a rich house reef, diving spots, great All Inclusive deals, or short airport transfers, which you often ask me about.
> Weather in the Maldives: when is it worth flying for a holiday
The overview includes resorts in North and South Malé Atoll, which you can reach in a short time by speedboat from the airport in Malé, as well as more distant islands in Ari, Baa, and Gaafu Alifu Atoll if you want to enjoy the experience of a seaplane or domestic airline flight. I believe my tips will save you time when comparing all the resorts on offer.

My tip and warning: As soon as you start comparing resorts in the Maldives by price, be careful and always check the price of the mandatory transfer, meals, local taxes, and service charges. A resort with a higher base price but with All Inclusive and transport included may end up being cheaper than lower-priced accommodation where you have to pay extra for the seaplane, food, and drinks.

5 most common excursions organized by resorts in the Maldives:
1. Snorkeling trip to a coral reef
Even though resorts in the Maldives have their own house reef, it’s worth taking a boat at least once to one of the more distant snorkeling spots. Depending on the specific atoll, you can observe colorful fish, sea turtles, rays, or small reef sharks, which are typical for the Maldives. Trips usually include equipment and a guide, but we like to bring our own snorkeling gear.
2. Sunset dolphin cruise
A dolphin cruise is one of the most popular excursions offered by resorts across the Maldives. Boats usually head out in the late afternoon to areas where groups of dolphins move, and the trip is often combined with sunset watching; however, as these are wild animals, no one can guarantee a sighting.
Resorts often have one or more excursions included for free as part of the stay and all-inclusive, so why not enjoy it. Personally, I can confirm that you’ll meet dolphins here on almost every boat trip. We even came across them while traveling by public ferry.
3. Sandbank trip / Resorts in the Maldives
Sandbanks are small islands made only of white sand that emerge from the turquoise lagoon. Resorts organize short trips here as well as longer private stays combined with snorkeling, swimming, or a picnic. The exact location and length of the visit depend on the tide and weather. However, most resorts in the Maldives have some similar sandbank in their excursion offer.
4. Visit to an inhabited local island – Maldives
A trip to one of the nearby inhabited islands will show you the Maldives outside the enclosed world of luxury resorts. During a short tour, you’ll see local villages, the harbor, a mosque, a school, or small shops and get to know the daily life of the residents better. Outside the tourist beaches, it’s necessary to respect local customs and choose more modest clothing.
5. Traditional sunset fishing / Resorts in the Maldives
Fishing has a long tradition in the Maldives, and an evening trip on a dhoni boat offers a pleasant combination of local culture, sailing, and sunset. Most often, fishing is done with a simple line lowered to the bottom, and some resorts will then prepare the fish you caught for dinner.
6. Manta ray and shark watching – Maldives
Watching manta rays and whale sharks is also an extraordinary experience, but it’s not a universal trip for all resorts, and the best locations and seasons vary by specific atoll. It therefore depends on the specific offer of the given resort.
