Weather in the Maldives: when to go on vacation

The Maldives attract visitors with white beaches, crystal-clear lagoons, and tropical temperatures all year round. However, the weather in the Maldives isn’t the same every month. If you want as many sunny days and calm seas as possible, it’s worth traveling during the dry season. If you don’t mind occasional showers and are looking for more affordable accommodation deals, the rainy season can also be an interesting choice. So, when should you go to the Maldives?

What is the weather like in the Maldives during the year?

The Maldives are located near the equator, which is why there is a hot tropical climate with relatively small temperature fluctuations. According to the official tourism portal, the average high temperature reaches approximately 31.5°C and the average low is 26.4°C. You’ll make use of light clothing regardless of your chosen vacation dates.

Two monsoons alternate during the year. The southwest monsoon brings wetter weather, while the northeast monsoon tends to be drier and sunnier. The Maldives Meteorological Service states that the main rainy season usually lasts from mid-May to November. The driest part of the year falls between January and March, while December and April are transition months. Personally, we have experience with the transition months of December and April, and I must say it wasn’t a bad choice at all.

Accommodation prices are better outside the high season and the weather is still stable for most of the day. Only in December did it happen to us that it rained for almost the entire afternoon two days in a row, but otherwise, the rest of the stay was beautiful and the sea was calm. Of course, it’s good to remember that it can rain practically anytime, but from a statistical perspective, we distinguish between the dry season and the rainy season.

Dry season: January to March

I consider the months of January, February, and March to be the best time for a vacation in the Maldives. The weather tends to be more stable, with more sunshine, a lower risk of long-lasting rain, and generally calmer seas—which is good to keep in mind if you are traveling by speedboats or public ferries.

This period is especially suitable for your first visit to the Maldives, honeymoons, stays with children, or a vacation focused on swimming and relaxing on the beach. Another advantage is more favorable conditions for boat trips and transfers between islands. However, expect this to be the most in-demand part of the year, so it pays to book flights and accommodation in advance.

December and April: great weather, but risk of showers and wind

December is usually mostly sunny for the Maldives, especially in the second half of the month. At the same time, it’s a transition between monsoons, so showers, overcast skies, or windier days can appear. We saw this for ourselves during one of our Christmas vacations.

April weather in the Maldives also offers very good conditions for your vacation. Temperatures are high and showers usually don’t have to significantly disrupt the holiday yet. However, as May approaches, humidity and the probability of rain increase.

Weather in the Maldives – rainy season: from mid-May to November

During the southwest monsoon, the weather is more changeable. Showers, thunderstorms, stronger winds, and higher waves occur more frequently. Rain doesn’t have to last all day—sometimes an intense shower comes and then it clears up again. Other times, however, cloudy and windy weather can persist longer.

And it is during the southwest monsoon that longer rains, strong winds, and rough seas can occur. Furthermore, differences exist between individual atolls, so follow the forecast for the specific area before your trip, not just for the capital, Malé. Personally, I recommend planning a vacation to the Maldives during the rainy season at the last minute, when you can see the approximate weather forecast.

The advantage of this period is a wider selection of attractively priced stays, and it’s usually not a problem to find a great deal even a week in advance. A vacation from May to November can therefore make sense for those travelers who don’t mind changeable weather and can adapt part of their program to the current conditions. It’s also great for families with children who cannot travel at any other time than during the summer holidays.

When to go to the Maldives for diving?

You can dive in the Maldives all year round. However, visibility, current strength, and the amount of plankton change according to the monsoon and the specific atoll. With that, the probability of encountering mantas, whale sharks, and other marine life also changes. Therefore, choose your area based on the type of diving and marine life observation you want to prioritize.

Which date is best from the perspective of weather in the Maldives?

For a classic beach vacation with the highest probability of sunny weather, choose January to March. Based on our experience, December and April can also be a good compromise, but you need to account for more variability. From mid-May to November, there is more rain and wind, but the Maldives are definitely not a closed destination during this period. Temperatures remain tropical and there can be plenty of beautiful time between showers. When traveling during this period, just leave a time buffer for transfers and don’t plan every day exclusively for sunbathing on the beach.
